Working on a weekend off

When you have a holiday weekend off from work, what do you do? Well we utilized the gorgeous weather and our time off from our jobs to get our garden back in working order!
Saturday morning started off with a trip to rent a tiller from our local Ace Hardware. Once we got that beast loaded into the truck and back home it was time to break ground in the garden since our last harvest in 2021.

After working the tiller around the perimeter a few times, all of a sudden it stops moving. Great, now what?! We could either load it back up and take it back to Ace and hope that they have another tiller we could swap it for or we can try to fix it at home. Luckily it was an easy fix and we had all the tools to get the tiller back up and running. Three hours and 20 bags of compost manure later, the ground was tilled up and looking refreshed.

Sunday was another perfect day for working outside! We stopped at Stiles Greenhouse for our supply of seeds and seedlings. They always have a wonderful selection and they did not disappoint this year! New to us this year are some heirloom varieties of bell peppers (they turn purple!) and tomatoes (a juicy orange color). Between the seeds and seedlings, we have a total of 21 different plants growing in our main garden.

We were also able to get the fencing up and install our new gate! It is shaping up to be something out of a Lawn & Garden magazine! Syremba built the gate himself and then sunk 2 4x4 posts into the ground to make this our best gate to date! Then we added some solar lights so we can admire the garden at any time.

On the last day of our extended weekend was just as action packed as the rest of the weekend. We moved the new raised bed to their new location after making the ground level. There was some assembly required, but the pieces went together nicely. I was also able to stain the gate to match the raised beds, and I think it turned out fantastic!

Now all that's left for us to do is fill in the raised beds and plant our herbs and flowers. For only working on the garden over the course of a three day weekend, we got an incredible amount of work done. We are proud of how it turned out and cannot wait for our plants to flourish!

Stay tuned for our progress this season!
